200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ANTARCTICA DISCOVERY: THE NEW POLAR GOST CAME INTO FORCE

cover
Publication date:

MOSCOW, January 28, 2020 – on the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica, GOST R 58783-2019 "Conducting research in polar regions. Terms and definitions" comes into effect. The discovery of the sixth continent of our planet was made
by a Russian naval expedition led by Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev on January 28, 1820.

The document sets out the main terms and definitions of concepts for polar regions
in the field of management of polar activities, including international ones,
for emergency rescue activities during research, design, production, conformity assessment, operation of polar stations and infrastructure facilities, transportation
and storage of equipment in special climate conditions, infrastructure and climate restrictions and natural phenomena of polar regions, as well as definitions of these terms.

GOST R 58783-2019 uses experience and developments from documents on standardization in the field of Geology and transport, normative legal documents, dictionaries. For the first time, the standard includes such terms and definitions in the field of polar activity as polar execution, special polar equipment, polar aviation, drifting polar station, polar airfield, polar passport, polar activity management system, infrastructure and climate restrictions.

"Artificial intelligence, 5G, augmented and virtual reality, robotics – these areas
are the most promising for consolidation in the "Arctic" state standards. At the same time, work is already underway to standardize big data technologies, additive manufacturing and autonomous vehicles. "Arctic" standards will form the basis
of infrastructure, technological, but at the same time ecological development
of the Arctic region. Creating a platform for systematic work on documents will allow us to achieve mass, rather than piece-by-piece application of innovations in the Arctic. This will be a determining factor in establishing technological leadership in the region in a competitive international environment," said Alexey Abramov, head
of Rosstandart.
